Containers of Glory

I tried really hard not to title this post "Contain Yourself". And I succeeded in that. But I still had to unload that bad pun. Sorry.

I have been thinking a lot lately about portability and mobility. I think a lot of twenty-somethings do a whole lot of moving about. So maybe this is something you can think about for yourself, or as a gift for an ambling friends, or just aesthetically. I think it might be a ideal time for people who move a lot to buys some traveling trunks. Specifically the old time sort of ones that tend to be really sturdy but also reasonably light (probably not when filled with books, but still). I am thinking here both about the ability to easily pack up stuff for moves, but also about the ability for these classy sort of pieces to function as furniture as well. Why go out and buy an Ikean dresser that costs well more than its use value? If you had a cool looking trunk that could hold your clothes and could easily be packed in a Uhaul when you inevitably flit around the renter's market. Downsides are things like stackabilty. Hard to access a trunk with other trunks stacked upon it. Of course it is up to you to play around. Something about it also fulfills for me some sense of knowing how much stuff is around you. Knowing exactly the weight of your material linkages. That seems like a good thing to be aware of.

Perhaps I am projecting both a need and an aesthetic here. But twenty-somethings of this time period definitely seem locationally unhinged. Even if that just means moving around the same city. Or cross country. Or country to country. Or whatever. Just seems to me that we should work with the line of flight impulse, use it to coax a decor into being. I for one know that I am always leaving.

So yeah.
