I'm going to apologize in advance for the practicality of this idea. Perhaps it will be a relief to some of you who find my 'go live in a shack in the woods and bathe in pools of stagnant water cause that's what being a person really means' type of posts a little tedious and played out.
I have problems with dust. Besides the fact that I am highly allergic to dust and dust mites, I also have a tendency to let my rooms collect a whole bunch of dust. This is the down side of living in a wood floored apartment...dust has no where but the very visible corners of the room to collect.
Previous answers to this problem have been brooms, dusters and vacuums. These are all reasonable and fairly sufficient, but have issues with getting to the dust that crowds around wires and cords and what not. And no matter what it is a multi-tool process. You dust the shelves and then you sweep the floor. And what if you are silly enough to accidently sweep before dusting? Well then you have to sweep again.
All this now leads to my silly silly idea. A dust magnet. I'm envisioning a ball of some sort, like a highly polished black orb that you set in the middle of the room for cleaning time. Here is my thinking. Electronics gather dust. I assume then that you could make an electronic device that was even better at this, really optimizing whatever it is that is dulling the dust that way. Maybe the orb has all sorts of pores all over it so when the dust comes its way it gets pulled through to the center of the orb where some form of storage exists.
Now this wouldn't be a permanent fixture of your room, nor would it be like vacuuming. Instead I imagine this will be like a bug fumigation. You set the orb up in the center of your room and then go away for the day. Throughout the day the dust in the room will slowly gravitate towards our magical orb and be wonderfully whisked away from your life. Maybe there could even be settings on the thing that could crank it up to dangerous levels of electromagnetic pull that you wouldn't want to spend the day around, but could get the job done in a shorter interval of time.
Ooohhh...the future...what will you hold?
