I picked up an album of wedding photos the other day and started thumbing through them. This isn't something I do very often, but I was bored. I was pretty disappointed by all the pictures, not because they weren't of good quality, they were just really boring. Every shot was a cliché.
I have never understood why weddings are so steeped in tradition and this collection of picture of people I did not know made that hit home. I wonder too if this adherence to customs doesn't cause a lot of the frustration. Anytime something has to be a certain way, it's just a recipe for resentment.
I've never been married and I have no imminent plans to be married, so I certainly understand if you stop reading right here. But what I'd like to bring to the table are some new ideas and additions to the wedding world. I'm going to spend some time thinking about as much of the process as I know and trying to come up with some different ideas.
I actually wrote this up for a myspace blog a long time ago but I'm recycling it here. It fits and I still think it's a good idea, so there. Plus I'm rewriting it.
I think one cool addition would be a collection of science fair style displays chronicling different points in the couple's relationship. Friends get to share a lot with couples and it would be neat to see that played out on construction paper and cardboard. Maybe someone would get creative and make a paper mache model of the mountain you all climbed together. Or just a collection of photos with a few editorial comments from the time you went to Baja and caught marlin.*
This would give people something to do during that awkward period post ceremony. You know, besides talk to each other. Plus, if done right, it would stir up nothing but good feelings all the way around. If you selected the right group of designers, everyone would get to learn a little bit about a different part of your life.
*I have no idea if there are marlin in Baja.

At a wedding almost two years ago of my friends Joe and Joanna the photographers hired were part of our circle of friends, so this probably led to the pictures being a bit more non-traditional. My favorite series are of various guests stuffing their faces with food in hilarious ways. They even convinced our friend's proper Japanese mother to participate. Good times.
