I hinted at a book with some kind of audio component a few weeks ago. This is a more in-depth look at that concept. Now, I don't the world is ready for a book that plays music. I mean, my dad wants all his technology to come with one button so it isn't so complicated.
That being said, some folks out there might like a soundtrack to go along with whatever they're reading. The idea being you would hit play, start reading, and have a musical guide through the ups and downs of the text. "But people read at different speeds?", you say. "And how will I know if it's lined up right?", you also say.
Valid concerns. However, I'll argue that the second one isn't that important. The music should create a feeling, not necessarily be a second for second match with the story. Which kind of addresses the first one. Perhaps a suggested words per minute could be stated on the beginning of the book. Do your best to stick with it, but know it isn't the end of the world if you can't. And if you really get into it, the music may take you along for the ride.
This would take a really good composer or an author willing to invest a lot of time to the music. I don't know if it would require a solo act or a collaboration. But it would be freaking sweet once it was finished. Ideally the book and the audio would stand alone. That may be too much to ask.
I know the guy who wrote Bone suggested a couple of popular songs to listen to while you read his stuff, and maybe this is just an extension of that.
I think it's high time that music and the written word get it on. Even if it leads to some awkwardness in the morning.
