A class that really ought to exist

Sociology for pre-schoolers.

And every grade level following that. Maybe sociology isn't the right name for the class. But hopefully you'll see what I'm getting at.

At some point it was decided, by people much smarter than me, what the curriculum for each grade level would be. I suppose this is aimed at achieving some sort of base knowledge to prepare kids for the collegiate careers, and thus send them to the real world ready to contribute, or to get in a fight with Puck.

And while there seems to be an effort to teach kids of other cultures, it also seems like it's often a surface level examination and almost treated as a novelty. That sucks. I feel like it would do kids well to learn how other cultures developed, why they do the things they do, how that's different from us, and how it might affect them in the future. And not just cultures with cool costumes and tasty food.

And that's why the idea to teach a class focusing on this at a younger age is one I gravitated to. We need more time with them to encourage and answer questions, and to do more than have a mexican food day and call it cultural awareness.

People are different. They look and sound different. We aren't all the same. I think it's silly to pretend otherwise. It's going to matter as they grow up. They're going to run into different types of people. I'm not saying we need to educate them about everyone. That just isn't possible. But allowing them to explore it and ask questions at a young, ankle-biting age might give them a few more tools to be reasonable people as they grow up.

Way to totally date yourself by referencing Puck and the real world.
