We had an earthquake last week. Not a huge one, but it definitely made me reevaluate my own readiness should a disaster strike. Just for the record, I'm not at all ready. But that's not really the point. Let's assume everyone has some form of emergency kit prepared and at the ready.
The thing you never see in them, or piled next to them, is any form of shelter. I put one together as a gift a few years back and it had the essential stuff: food, water, first aid, radio/ flashlight that didn't require batteries, an emergency blanket, and a few other items. But nowhere to stay dry and warm if you had to. Nowhere to sleep. There seems to be an assumption that shelters will be in place. But what if there isn't? Throwing a two person tent that can be slung over your shoulder next to your kit isn't that hard. And it could come in real handy.
So that's the idea. Throw some shelter next to your kit. And if you don't have an emergency kit, make one. Just plan on being self-sufficient for three days.
Now you'll even have a place to call home.
