So, this idea may ring a little hollow for some. Largely because it places demands on your time that you may not want. I think you'll come out a better person on the other end, but you might initially disagree.
You should learn a trade. Carpentry. Electricianing. Cooking. Whatever. But really learn it.
NE talked here about wanting to promote this more to the little ones, and maybe this ties into that. Maybe not. But how helpful would it be to have a skill that doesn't go away, even if the world is on its ass? There will probably always be a call for carpenters. I'm not saying this should be your profession, just something very tangible you could give back to the world should it ever need you.
There's lots of work to be done. And it would be nice to have the skills to do the work when it comes up.
You could take a class with a loved one and then volunteer your time. That might make you feel good, no?

Think how much more progress would be achieved in the rebuilding of the gulf coast if all those people who are able to volunteer had gotten and listened to this advice...
