I'm going to keep this to a single idea, even tho a slew of them are frothing in my head all around the same topic. For better or worse this idea came to be while listening to Gogol Bordello, my new favourite gypsy punk band--I'm being okay with that sentence. And subsequently Ci and I talked about how ingenious it is. Not my idea, but the idea that is sort of already there.
Three day wedding.
So before you go saying it just can't be practically accomplished in this day and age, we've already made a version of it meant to work just so in the here and now. Wedding starts Friday around twilight, probably in the summer time outdoors at a vineyard or something. As the dusk settles in the band starts up and doesn't stop until Sunday around brunch.
The setting would have to be a rented palazzo style estate where people were welcome to flop and there were plenty of rooms for those not accustomed to flopping per se. And of course people could come and go as they saw fit...
But the point is that much like the ancient hearth, the party would never die out. All hours of the night and day from start to finish. Full of dancing, boozing, eating, feasting in all those ways that are us when we're at our best.
I feel like this really relies heavily on gathering a central crew of people who really want to make this happen. A few key player friends. A few family members who really know how to tie one on. And from there it puts itself together.
I feel like it should be clear that my intention is all about the community as festive and the idea of pure celebration where you actually make your life for a time into this celebratory world. It is so possible and so worthwhile. Marriage is huge and we should really grant it that life by all pitching in to show how much it means to us as well.
I hope this rings true for people. And I hope that when the time come and I throw the party described above, that you won't crap out and say you're too busy to devote a full weekend to it.
Bring it.
