Rights of Passage

Notice how I used a homophone to make a point.

Today I'm thinking about what happens when you get older and our culture's awful sense of maintaining youthful beauty. Awful. People spend large sacks of money avoiding their age and trying to lie to everyone. And it doesn't work. And it would probably be even worse if it did work cause talk about a negative cultural value. Youth is fine, but it is just a thing. One fucking thing among many.

What I suggest, is that you, and hopefully other people to, but at least you, make it a point to accept your age in a very specific way. My idea is really to create a sort of ceremonial 'you're old' transition. You know, like the puberty rituals, or marriage rituals. My real point is that it is a fact of life and one that is probably better dealt with by facing it head on and getting comfy with the idea that you're not really young any more and things hurt more than they did.

What I would really like to see if people taking those sacks of money they were going to use to fix themselves up and use it to take some time off work, go on a life-changing retreat to a small Greek island and really find yourself. I would probably go off into the woods and get in tune with my body. But anything works. Just spend the time adjusting. Make the time for yourself so that you can reflect and be okay. Hiding and delaying will never give you that kind of peace.

Just a thought. We'll see how I deal with it when my time comes. But here's to being hopeful.
