Easing the commute

I flew into work this morning, largely because it's president's day and a good chunk of the world is off. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to who's recognizing the holiday. I mean, I'm here, tho I guess I don't have to be. And the UPS guy came, so they're working.

Anyway, the idea to thin out the commute a bit is to have city or industry wide commute holidays. Days where your office is either closed or you work from home. Cities could mandate this, or it could come from higher up the food chain like from a county or state. So two days a year the entire city of Fremont (so either a big city or a collection of smaller ones) would be given a holiday and all the businesses would be closed. What's two more holidays, really? Or you could break this down by industry. But that seems harder, though possibly more effective.

The end goal would be reduced traffic in trouble spots, like around big cities and such.

This might work. Or we might just get extra days off. Sounds like a winner to me.
