A spoon you shouldn't eat with

This is a gift. Not for you, but for someone else. If you are alone this V-Day, in which there is no shame, I suppose you could make this as a gift for yourself, but that is a sadder thought then I prefer to entertain right now.

No, this idea is best carried out for someone you’d like to know was worth the effort.

Ok, on to what you need in terms of supplies. First off, you need a large spoon. Secondly, a hack saw. Screw it, I’m going to list everything else. You need: a thumbnail sized image of something meaningful, some sort of adhesive that will stick to metal, a metal file, a pair of pliers and strong hands, clear lacquer, and some sort of necklace (I forget what material is best for this, but you want the fabric kind, not the metal kind).

Cut the handle off the spoon leaving enough to bend back to create a hook that will fit over the necklace. If your cuts were rough, use the metal file to saw the end of the spoon down. Scratchy metal isn’t anything you want near your neck or chest. Now you have a little charm thing going. Use the pliers and the muscular hands to do the bending.

Next, take the image and place it with a tiny bit of adhesive inside the spoon. Lay the spoon flat and add small layers of lacquer, letting them dry, until the spoon is nearly full and the image is completely covered. Leave it alone. Everything needs to dry thoroughly.

Once done you should have a neat looking, homemade necklace that has some meaning. About the image, pick anything you want, but something detailed enough to be interesting, yet basic enough to be understood is probably your best bet. Once you start messing around, you’ll see what works and what doesn’t.

But what if you don’t have someone who would appreciate such a gift? Well then get them a Target gift card and call it a day.
