You put it off just like you put everything else off. When are you going to get your life together? Soon, I hope.
Because an emergency simply will not wait for you to be ready. (He said, waving his finger in a parental-type manner.)
But seriously, you really should prepare an earthquake safety kit. And it should have, according to the American Red Cross, the following things in it:
First aid kit and essential medications.
Canned food and can opener.
At least three gallons of water per person.
Protective clothing, rainwear, and bedding or sleeping bags.
Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
Special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members.
Written instructions for how to turn off gas, electricity, and water if authorities advise you to do so. (Remember, you'll need a professional to turn natural gas service back on.)
I submit you should also have a book to read, some matches, and one of those hand powered generators. A good utility knife wouldn't hurt either.
You should have one of these in your car AND one in your house.
These are actually really fun to put together, and the satisfaction of seeing it as you come and go will help you sleep a little better at night. It couldn't hurt at the very least.
