As readers may or may not be aware I have long advocated for California's secession from the United States. This idea is positioned such that it will be an aide to that process and hopefully a corrective to the many ways a CA secession could take terrible turns (e.g. it is led by Arnold).
Actively opting out. What I mean by this is absenting yourself from the process, be it voting, marriage, or any other convention that is surrounded by heavy quantities of social pressure. Now here it the important part. This is a horrible idea if you aren't doing something else. When you opt not to vote you need to be opting into something else...say, anti-government protests and fund raising bake sales. Or to be more direct, something like putting your money into a non-profit.
The premise I'm working with here is that a lot of what is bad in the world is bad because it has too much momentum for any one to stop and because it is all too easy to go the way of the crowd. My examples are of course my own. But whatever you think is mindlessly and horribly done, don't take part any more. But put your energy somewhere that addresses the same issue only better.
The system makes it easy to be in the system and hard to change the system. Sometimes the answer is to get out of the system in whatever ways you can, to live your life without turning towards it for good or bad things (as far as is possible). But when you turn away, make sure you're turning towards something and make that real, make that your own.
