A different target

I've been doing this for about 10 months now.

Take a look at those "do-it-all" department stores like Target and Wal-mart, and then go somewhere else. But really think about where you're going.

Seriously, I haven't been inside a Target for 10 months.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with those kinds of stores. They're convenient in just about every way. But they do make us lazy. So maybe there is something wrong with them.

Instead of seeking out some of the smaller, local places we end up supporting this big fat hub of everything. Again, that's great when you need a broom, socks, and the new Daughtry album. But each of those things is available somewhere else, too.

And they're available at a place that could probably use your business. Yes, it will take longer to make three stops and yes, there are some downsides to this. But I can almost guarantee you'll feel better about yourself.

To further refine this idea, anytime you feel the need to go to Target, think about what it is you actually are purchasing and see if there isn't somewhere else you can get it. Maybe it's someone local who has handmade this product just for you. Wouldn't it be nice to give them your business instead of whatever bland entity is the Target.

Dude, I agree with you SO MUCH. Sometimes it costs a dollar more to go to your local widget store, but that dollar means sooo much to them, whereas it is meaningless to a Target type of store. My only real exception is amazon.com because they are ridiculously cheaper than mom-and-pop places. The difference, however, between a Kmart and your local store is not so big.

There is a very relevant South Park episode that we should all re-watch.
