Holiday

Invent yourself a holiday. Pick a day, give it a name, and traditions, makes it special, make it annual. The adornments will grow yearly and you'll have yourself a full blown living holiday.

This is a fun idea for me, because I think we've successfully created a number of fake holidays to overlap the somewhat meager US Holiday Calendar. These tend to be parties, yes, but the don't have to be for this idea to work. I think our invented holidays end up being friendy parties because that is the place of life we are in. If you have kids or a bunch of kids you could totally make a more family themed holiday that involving the exchanging of whatever homemade art projects or whatever.

The point is simply to create something that can be a repeatable tradition, something that people can play with and continually grow. Our most successful ones have tended to employ the use of communal games and eating. Pretty much that is the definition of holiday in the positive sense. Through in booze and you're making me happy. Through in miscommunication and obligatory attendance and you'll be right back at dead and dying traditions that don't have any spirit left to them. So make it your own and keep it open and adaptable.

Cause see, that is what community does. It moves and grows and is a product of the people in it. And why not be the growing cluster that glows outward its goodness into the world? Why not invent a little something fun that other people can emulate or not. Maybe yours will catch on, or maybe you'll catch on to someone else's, it's all gravy.

Worst case scenario you have a one time party whose decorations you won't get a change to reuse.
