Food Mouth

I considered asking NowEverybody to write this introduction, because I was a little uncomfortable introducing my own moms. I mean, how do you stay impartial? But I wrote an intro for Brother Nate, so I can handle the family ones, I think.

Here are some bands my mom likes: The Decemberists, Rilo Kiley, and Bright Eyes. It's like she's from Omaha! But she's not. She's from the West Coast, a sort of Oregon/ California hybrid, actually. And I recently found out she lived in Pacifica, which I think is epically cool.

I'm always impressed by her thoughts and advice. There's an easiness to it that makes all things seem possible. I think you'll see that resonated in her idea. I sometimes wonder how she managed my brother and I when we were kids, not that we were terrible, just that it couldn't have been easy. But she's smart and tough and pays attention. Erin Brockovich ain't got nothing on her.

I try to eat healthy food. Sometimes, though, I get cravings for things that aren’t so healthy. When that happens and I have enough time to think before the craving takes over my rational mind I try to think about where food comes from. Let’s say I get a craving for something crunchy. I could go for either an apple or corn chips. Really. The corn chips are probably made from scraps leftover from making pet food, formed into cute shapes, rinsed under a mist of oil, bathed in an oil bath, shimmied through salt showers then dried to crunchy perfection. This whole process is devoid of any human touch….well, maybe at the very beginning someone’s finger touched the start button. The apple on the other hand was plucked from a living tree by a live hand (please don’t tell me otherwise) and becomes available at the organic produce farmer’s market whereby I pick it up with my hand, give it a cursory dusting off and bite into it. Crunchy perfection again. My idea is to think about what you eat and where it comes from.
