The website is going to be called HeartOf.com and it will function similarly to the 60% accurate giant, Wikipedia.
So every city that wants to will be able to list itself on HeartOf.com with its own extension. Imagine, www.HeartOf.com/SanFrancisco. Those who want to can post events, restaurants, parks, bars, shops, local citizens and anything else that they think embodies the spirit of their particular city. But in order to keep it honest, and hopefully reach some kind of consensus, residents will be able to vote/ suggest edits. So if someone puts Chipotle on this as the best burrito spot in the city, it won't last long.
Cities really do develop their own sort of ethos (is that the right application of that word? I'm none too smart and I heard it once and thought it was cool.) and it seems only fair that they should be able represent that spirit on the interweb. Citysearch and Yelp! offer a chance to review things, but any restaurant (Chiptole included) could find its way there. I'm looking for the outlets that define a city. Maybe not the super secret places you and your crew hang out, those are for you, but the places you'd tell a friend to hit up when they came in to town.
Once this got off the ground you could have things like HeartOf.com/California and HeartOf.com/Earth.
I had this idea a while back to visit all the places I indentified as unqiuely Californian and document them, but that's too much work, and it's just my opinion. This way we all get to be involved and hype the places that make us feel like we are where we are, wherever we are.
