Today we can think about what our dogs and cats can do for us. Or maybe not. What I'm thinking about is less like the Flintstone's bird record player and more like having your donkey bring your groceries back from the store. That is to say, still impractical, but in no way totally and completely unrealistic. Really.
So I'm not really sure what your cat and dog can really functionally do for you. But maybe your dog could actually bring in the paper without too much drool. Or the cat could kill a mouse for you. I'm just thinking that these animal helpers might actually have helper purposes after all. I mean if you had a heard of sheep and a sheep dog they could really do some good. Or maybe you could have a real rooster alarm clock. I mean, I hate my alarm clock, but I feel like I wouldn't begrudge the nobility of the rooster quite as much.
Who knows. More animals is a good thing. We spent thousands of years getting them to hang out with us without killing us. The least we could do is put that companionship to some good use. Less need for made up things. And any time we can do that the better.
