Cold Hard Dream World

Many a post in the same vein, does not repetitive make. Is what I always say.

When I was in Fifth grade my favourite thing was the extra credit projects we got to do. They had a name I can't remember, but I think it was probably an acronym and probably said something like Kids Are Best When They Use Their Imaginations (KABWTUTI). Tho of course not that.

But the projects were really BYO Project. You could imagine anything you wanted and just fucking run with it. One of my personal favourites was when I got to create an entire world, which pretty much just meant creating a single country that was an island. That is retrospect was probably horribly flag-waving and nationalistic. But what did I know, I was ten.

The point is that I was forced and got to create all these little nuances of daily life. Like really fine grained stuff about eating habits and economic activities. This is basically what every sci-fi writing has to do.

And the value of this stuff is that it is sort of rigorous thought experiment. Where you put your dream on a dish and poke at them and subject them to all sorts of random influences. And when you're done, maybe your dreams have a little more resilience. A little more practical legs to fend off the asshole neigh sayers.

And there is that.
