Why hasn't there been a definitive western video game?

I actually really want to know. I would imagine it has something to do with the powers that be thinking there isn't enough interest. But really? If you did it right, and made it a cool game, people wouldn't play it? Really? (I feel like Seth Myers and Amy Poehler.)

So the idea is to get this damn project in the works and on the table.

There are so many ways this could be done. MMORPG style. Grand Theft Auto style. Or bring all the cool good guys and bad guys from all the awesome movies and make them playable characters in the game. I swear to jeebus, this would be one of the biggest selling video games of all time if they did it right.
