I propose we start thinking about vacations as chances to go places in America and learn things about our fellow Americans. Like, spend a week in Kansas. See what's important to those people by watching the local news and having dinner with local citizens. Maybe it isn't as glamorous as Hawaii or Costa Rica or some other such goddamn place. But it's informative.
I mean, you can go to another country and work on a farm (which sounds really cool, incidentally) but I'm not sure you can do that in America. What the hell, America? Start developing some work/ travel/ vacation programs.
What brought this all on was an article about the former president of the Sierra Club who is now working as a consultant for Wal-Mart. Getting to see their corporate structure and where they live opened up his eyes and gave him a greater sense of perspective. The way he described it was pretty amazing. You can read all about ithere: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/01/06/CM9TTS800.DTL&hw=wal+mart&sn=001&sc=1000. (I need to learn how to make links show up as words. I'll figure it out by next week, promise.)
I think we could all use a little dose of that.

I'm pretty sure you can do the farm thing here. Almost positive.
