Volunteering Man

Today is the end of April, and also the end of our 16th month of ideas. Suck on that, doubters.

Ok, so a friend recently shared some pictures of Burning Man. And it seemed really cool. Lots of activity, ingenuity, resources...do you see where I'm headed with this?

I really like that Burning Man exists. I really, really do. But I just feel like all that energy could be spent helping people. And maybe one could argue that it is helping by creating positivity and bringing people together in a way that just isn't possible in today's world. But I'm not that person and I'd probably call the person making that argument a communist. At least behind their back I would.

But now if we took those people and built some houses. Or did some farming. Or clear-cut a rainforest. Then we'd have something.

Life isn't good times and drugs in the desert. It's hard work and blogging all day long.

I guess the idea is an event distinct from burning man. A large collection of people that head to a destination, set-up camp, and do some good. Like the Red Cross, but more grass roots and less organized. Couldn't have folks like this been helpful during Katrina? Or that hurricane in New Orleans?

I don't know. This idea has holes but I got to share how I really feel about rainforests. So winner for me.

Actually, there exists a group called Burners Without Borders that pretty much does that sort of thing. Group of peeps that weren't friends previous to Burning Man, now they get together outside of that event and travel places and work and such. I know about them because of their work in New Orleans. So, yeah. You pretty much just blogged exactly about them.
