Static Internet

I've always been confused why computers, especially with the new big ol harddrives can't keep a slice of the internet on them. Or at least why such a function isn't more readily available for average joe me.

Here is the deal. The internet changes. What if someone, like an artist, put together this really great website that is itself a piece of art. Well? What happens when they update it and it changes? What if you wanted to see the old one again. I mean, it is called caching, and there are all sorts of things that do it.

But I want it to be super normal and also have a 'play' program that is sort of like a presentation. You know, virtual environments (eg complete with all the links and actions and shit) in the absence of a connection.

While I'm totally willing to bet that that is already around, I feel like it should be a pretty standard part of all web experience. Seems to me that your browser should cache almost everything you want it to during a session and sort of 'apply for updates' when it goes looking for the site again. There could even be some notice on the browser that says with a yellow or red flag 'you're looking at content you looked at yesterday, if you wanna see the live version: let's do this thing'

So let's have it technology. I'm waiting.
