Following on the heels of Msgr's new word rule from last week I purpose 1) one new rule and 2) a word watching committee--tho very much unlike France's jerk wad word rule committee.
1) Take the apostrophes out of words if people would understand you given the context (and add in accents and other breathing marks where they are useful for the reader, eg: learnéd)
So the first rule shouldnt come as a surprise to anyone who has e'er used the internet. Basically it is common usage at this going to ditch the 'strophes in didnt and cant. And yes I know that cant is another word. But guess what: people get what you mean, which is the point of language.
My second point about adding in accents and marks is that there is a specific function for these types of creatures. We should just be using them when they make sense, not when they are supposed to be there.
And so the larger idea 2) that stems from this for me is quite simply that there should be a committee (which probably there already is) that works with dictionary and languagey type people to look at the trends on the internet and see if there is anything of real value coming from that sector. And then when there is, adopting it. Sort of like a steering committee for language.
Now of course I also hate this idea. Because this is what the French do when they only allow certain new words every year and are bastards that won't let human speech evolve like it should. What I intend is more like a group that tries to find value in the productive force that is the internet. And the sheer fact that more people that ever are writing and communicating. Which means it is changing. And they need to keep pace. That and change occasionally at least means positive innovation. Which means it would be nice if someone was looking out for that stuff and making note of it for the greater use.
And that my friends is what you call a diatribe.

I think the LSA (or someone like them) actually does this - at least the collecting new words from the internet part. Not sure they have much to say about punctuation, but I'm with you there as well.
