When people retire, I don't think they should disappear or become consultants (which is becoming more and more common). I think they should form a kind of on call relief corps for the next 5-10 years. When the company gets shorthanded or has a special project, they can call in the relief team. Or fill in for vacations, etc. How is this different than just being a consultant? Well, they're not being paid for their opinion. The job is to come in and finish a project and then leave back into the sunset.
Maybe the distinction isn't that significant, but I sort of see it. They aren't on retainer like a consultant. They'd get paid for hours worked. The same wage as whatever they were making when they left, adjusted for inflation.
So why would the retired folks want to do this? The money, I think.
And if you don't buy that then congratulations, you found a flaw in my plan.
