Practicalities

So little things in life can sometimes get a fella down. Sure you shouldn't let 'em, but irritation if the mother of invention as they say. Thus, today we're going to invent something lamely practical: a better dish drainer.

I have never met a dish drained I've liked. Sure some come barbed for glass and cup holding in excellent ways. But one thing is always true, it either leaves water all over your counter or holds the water until it becomes a stagnant pool ripe for mosquitoe infestation. This is, for me, the biggest persistent problem with the dish drainer as object.

Ciana helped me puzzle this out the other night, and the conclusion that we came to was simple and revolutionary. You know how all the capture the water dish drainers come with a lip to drain excess water away...but obvs don't do so because there is a hump, meaning you have to tilt the thing to get it to drain...tilt the thing full of precarious dishes.

So the idea, to get to it finally, is quite simply to make a dish rack that's base is titled such that the water actually runs off into the sink. And of course this means that the rack itself still has to be level, I assume this can be done fairly simply. And hey presto you have yourself a nice new dish rack.

yes, yes, and yes. If any ideas on this blog should be patented it is this, purely because of the uncomplicatedness of it. Anyone who has ever owned a drying rack undergoes the same turmoil you described. We used small blocks of wood underneath one end to make the tray actually angled while I was living in SB. But an actual tilted design could be super cool and sleek looking. Do it.
