Marching orders

Real simple: professional football teams need marching bands. And male cheerleaders. And they need to feature the female cheerleaders more on TV. Not just them, but their routines. Anyway, let's focus on the first one.

I don't know when it seemed like a better idea to blare popular music through speakers as opposed to having a living, breathing band on site. I mean, if it's good enough for college, why not the pros? Folks may think it's old school and would make the pro game seem outdated, or at least I've heard those criticisms before. But really? You could still use the speakers if you really wanted to. Marching bands do a lot of good. In terms of motivation. And personally, I think in terms of intimidation too. You add a soundtrack to the hard hits and awesome runs by your team. An imposing one. And one that carries more weight than the latest linkin park song because it's specifically for your team.

And most pro teams have theme songs. The bands could do those.

Bands are a nice touch in college, we need them for the pros. And I think they'd find they could get people to do it for free. Or at least really cheap.

They wouldn't have to be on the field for halftime. Maybe they could for some of the games. But bring the frisbee dogs out if you must. Just let them in a small section of the stands. And if you're a team that isn't selling out anyway, you have no excuse. This will make your stadium look more full, give the fans who do show up a nice boost, and maybe get you noticed.

So let me just say that there are some professional teams (cough, Packers, cough) that do take advantage of this. The Badger marching band is at a few games a year (according to my cousin they were even wandering through the stands playing during the October 7th game against da Bears) and they also have a drum line called the Tundra Line that was there on Sunday against the Redskins. Also, the Packers haven't had official cheerleaders since 1988. Instead they bring in two local college squads, males and all, for the games. So, uh, I guess you should be a Packer fan.
