I heard this idea a long time ago and couldn't tell you who the original creator was. Whoeevr they were, I hereby give them credit. This is a good one though, and well worth stealing.
So there's you, tired at 10pm, headed home. And there's future you, who has to get up at 5:00am to go to work. But you need gas for your car. Like, on empty style. So who gets the gas? You? Or future you?
The idea here is to do nice things for future you. So you get the gas and then it's smooth sailing in the morning. Just roll out of bed and zip out to work. Future you would thank you.
Mostly this can be applied to things you really don't feel like doing. Like, "I know I need to run but I'm so tired." Well, future you is going to feeling A LOT better if you fit in some exercise right now.
Does that make sense? Anytime your reaction to something is "Ugh, I don't want to do this" think about who the hell really would want to do it, and do it anyway. Future you will love you more. And if future you is happy, they'll do everything they can to take care of you.
