I was watching Ghost Rider last night, and honestly, it could have been a lot better. Same with There Will be Blood. And a few other movies.
Last year I proposed finalperusal.com and some may find this idea strikingly similar. Hopefully it's more specific though.
So, in a movie, you're basically telling a story. I guess it depends on the movie, but you're telling a story. Same thing with books. You're encapsulating a series of events or facts; sometimes to entertain people, sometimes to educate them, and sometimes for your own benefit. It doesn't matter why you tell the story, but you are.
You could argue that everything comes down to some sort of tale. Music, architecture, cars.
My idea is that the storyteller become a recognized job in this country. And that these people be offered consulting jobs for movies, books, albums, etc. Obviously the mediums are different but I would argue anyone who can stand in front of people with no props and keep their attention could only help a movie with huge special effects. A giant screen is pretty captivating, but imagine a giant screen with cool effects and a captivating story line. How does that tickle you?
I think i wrote before about storytellers. Maybe not. But they just tell stories. That's what they do. They know how it works, when to pause, when to weave in different elements. I don't think they get much respect because they have no medium other than speaking. And who wants to watch that? Not when there are so many things available to augment the speaking. Sounds, lights, etc.
But these people have got it down. They can take you from point A to point B. It's the reason This American Life is so popular, I think. It's just a story. We still want that but it really isn't that readily available.
So, consultants who are also storytellers. That's my goal. That's my vision.
